12″ x 24″, newspaper and enamel spray paint on canvas
This is a five layer stencil that I created for the 2011 Australian Stencil Art Prize.
It features a couple kissing against a backdrop of newsprint which contains recent articles about the mass shootings in Norway, the death of Amy Winehouse and the increase in violent crime on the Gold Coast.
It was inspired by a striking photo that was taken by freelance journalist, Richard Lam of a guy kissing his girlfriend after she was knocked to the ground by riot police when a hockey match led to fights breaking out on the streets of Vancouver, Canada.
The message I was hoping to convey is that even during times of darkness it’s love that will light our way.
